Learning about Garza and her career as a painter was enlightening because she is quite famous for her collection of paintings that revolve around a theme of family and her heritage. She shares the significance of each event and the ties to joining with family, which is crucial in the Mexican culture. Some of the depictions and events that are written about are the process of making empanadas, celebrating birthdays and holidays, and religious ceremonies. Alarcon, each page is translated into Spanish from the English counterpart. The book’s text serves as caption to family photos, through her eyes and the extension placed upon the canvas, informing the audience of family activities that are common in the Mexican heritage. The basis of the tale is formed based off snippets of author and illustrator Carmen Lomas Garza’s life growing up in United States border town of Kingsville, Texas as a Mexican American whose family had immigrated from south of the border.
